Best Mates Having a Top Notch Night

So the whole week my sister has been nagging that I need to see my best mate before he heads back to Stellenbosch.

Last night I finally got a chance to see him as he invited me over for a good old braai. What a blessed and chilled evening it was. Being in his presence with his family and people we grew up with, listening and telling all our funny stories to other people, just chilling by the fire, talking bout playing songs on the guitar and him drinking his beer and keeping my wine glass filled… It just really showed me how much I cherish our friendship and how much I miss this guy during the year. It was great that we could see each other so soon, as we usually on see each other over summer holidays, so we’re stoked our schedules worked out – especially with this visit home being so unplanned for me…

We’ve been mates since grade 1, and his younger brother and my younger sister have been best mates too since they were little. We have been through so much together, the high’s and low’s… We have so many cool stories in which we have gotten into trouble or I’ve bailed him out of trouble… He’ll tell you and joke that in school I was his P.A, helping him with Afrikaans and loads more and he got me through my Maths and Science later on… From stealing trolleys and getting chased by police to blowing up things and going fishing, camping out and playing games, from girls to sports and holding gum guards, even teaching me and showing me the different stars…we’ve done it all.

So last night the stories were flying, we were joking around and mocking each other’s varsities, our glasses stayed filled, his mom told stories about how we’ve stuck together through it all, we ate together, Ryan dishing up for me, wanting me to eat as much as he was having and the food was amazingly delicious, photos were taken and later we ended up playing some games ’til about one in the morning. After that it was bed time, so that there would be time for an early surf session…

Our friendship, hooligans sticking with hooligans through thick and thin has proven to be an incredible one. It is one we have worked at but one that has also just stuck and worked out no matter what, which seems to have surprised many especially since we have remained close mates after school despite being miles apart. This is a friend whom I cherish so much and whom I can always chill with and be myself, and with that, an awesome guy, such a stand-up guy with amazing mannerisms, an all rounder with such a heart for God too. We grew up in the same cell/home group, went to our matric dance together and pretty much have seen it all together. He is a friend whom I definitely will be mates with ’til we die…somehow we just know this. And what a blessing and honour it has been and is to be friends and call him my best mate.

A top notch evening, with a friend worth far more than this world could offer! Such a good time with him and our other mates, Josh, Reece, Grant and Stubbs, before we both head back to our different varsities 🙂 xx

Dad’s 50th Weekend

IMG_06282 weekend’s ago (10th-12th May), I went home for my dad’s 50th. It truly was a blessed weekend as I got to see family and just spend quality time with my parents. It was a bitter sweet weekend as it really opened my eyes to the situation at home and how my parents are struggling financially and the time at home was way too short, but I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the deep conversations I had with my parents. We really opened up to each other and my dad really appreciated us coming home for his birthday and my mom was happy we were there for mother’s day. We also laughed a lot and my dad told lots of stories, I got to share details with them about the new budding relationship in my life and also just share my heart with them. It was great being able to lie against my dad and keep warm while talking on the couch and awesome to chill on my mom’s bed and just watch a movie with her. The weekend weather was cold and rainy, so it gave us a lot of time to spend indoors chatting and catching up. I also got to see one of my best mates, Stubbs, on Friday night for coffee and then we cooked supper for his mom. We both got to share and talk about new opportunities and prospects coming into our lives and what our future’s hold and just talk deeply about God and a bunch of stuff, sharing jokes and stories and coffee – it really was a blessing.IMG_0629 IMG-20130510-WA002

That same weekend though, my boyfriend had been involved in a car accident, a head on collision. Our friend Michelle was in the car with him and she got hurt, breaking her collar bone and cracking two ribs, he went through the windscreen. Luckily, everyone came out alive but I was pretty shaken up when I got the news as I wasn’t in the same province and was over 700km’s away. Luckily, God has blessed us with four amazing friends, them being his two best friends and each of their girlfriends. Freddie and Ashley, Cornu and Eline went over to go see him, sending me news and photos to let me know he’s okay and reassuring me. I really appreciated it and truly have been blessed by these amazing people. My parents were with me when I got the news, so they comforted me while I cried and went through the motions of shock and processing it all. My mom gave hugs and chocolate, while my dad made tea and told jokes. It really was a great weekend overall, that strengthened relationships and really built solid foundations for a great future. It really showed me what love is and how blessed I am to have people who care in my life. I am so thankful for it all.IMG-20130511-WA003 IMG-20130511-WA002

Special Weekend Breakaway for Dad’s 50th

In a few days, on Friday 10th May to be exact, I get to fly home and see my dad as he turns 50 on Friday. I get to go home, see the parents and some good friends and get back to the coast for the weekend.
Can’t wait to see my dad and then the beautiful coast – that bridge too… When I do – I know I’m home. And I’m excited and grateful. It is a blessing, even if it is just for a little while!

*Thanks to Stubbs and my mom for the photos.

God’s Loving Fingerprints over Easter

Girl-and-Sunset-1So this year my Easter weekend was a little different than usual. It was my first Easter away from home and I was definitely aware of it. It had me thinking a lot about how I spend it and how all the people close to me spent it…and even though we were all in different places, I was updated by each one and it kinda felt like we were all still celebrating together. Kinda like all living under the same roof just in different rooms of the house.

But what was most beautiful about being apart and doing things so differently, is how extremely close God felt to me, and to each and every other person in their Easter celebrations. He was everywhere and He made it visible. So although I was doing things at my own pace and it was totally different – it ended up being a very special Easter weekend.

On Thursday  we chilled out and saw two great friends, Jaco and David and caught up a little with them. That evening, I was on my way to church, dressed all in pink, ready for communion that would take place at church, when a little crisis came up. Luckily my little sister was very graceful about it, and after the crisis was taken care of we headed to the Union Buildings, with our pink sterie stumpies. It was such a beautiful evening, with a lot of adventure and exploring and bonding. After that, a friend called me out for coffee at Just Cuban restaurant, and we had a very chilled evening chatting and being very mellow. We had a little heart to heart over coffee and some hubbly and when I got home round 12pm, I found my little sister in the kitchen making soup. So we had soup together before we called it a night. Pretoria-20130328-00611 Pretoria-20130328-00613 IMG-20130328-00609 IMG-20130328-00699

Friday was a chilled day and I was updated by a mate who was cycling in P.E over the Easter weekend. Just showing me how beautiful the routes are over there. Pretoria-20130325-00691 PE

As well as one of my friend’s who stayed in the same house as I, Pieter, got engaged to his lovely fiance Annine!!! So another wedding on the way32588_10151365699212745_1388385616_n (1)

Saturday was pretty chilled apart from my sister’s cleaning. I also was worrying about a friend who had been working 3 weeks straight without any breaks, so I waited on him to hear where we were going to go chill out. But he surprised me with a phone call after 10pm, mentioning that I should get dressed up and stuff and he’d pick me up in 15mins or so. That turned out to be such a great evening, we chilled and danced all night with more really good mates and ended up sleeping over in Hartebeespoort with all of them. It turned out to be a very fun-filled evening and the next morning was even more special as it was Easter Sunday. IMG-20130330-00700

Easter Sunday was very special, as usually I’m at the Sunrise Service back home with mates. It is usually round 5 or so a.m. at St. Mikes beach. This year I couldn’t be there but it was still pretty special, as usually afterwards, they do baptisms. This year, my best mates, little sisters were baptized. Daryl’s little sister, Bridget and then Stubbs’ little sister, Helen were baptised by Sim! Although I couldn’t be there, my best mates were there for it, and even though I wasn’t, I got to see the photo’s and I’m so happy for them. It reminded me of when my best mates got baptised and when I did. Really great and special moments. While that was happening, we were waking up in Harties and it was a very chilled morning with the wind blowing through the trees. We all woke up, one of my very special mates started a fire as we all sat and talked, watching him and eating Easter eggs. The guys then left to go buy some stuff for breakfast, while us ladies made turns going through the shower. When they got back, we were all sipping on Mc Donald’s machine coke, while playing pool and Eugene was making us all omelettes. We all sat having a chilled breakfast and talking about religions and Easter and a few other things. At about 1pm it was time to say our goodbyes and head back to Villeria and Hatfield, Pretoria. It was such a chilled drive, the trip took us an hour as we listened to music, got a little lost as we got to know Pretoria a little better and chatted. At about 3pm my little sister and I headed out to Mozambik, ending our day off with talking about Easter and a few other things, taking photos, eating amazing seafood and sipping on RnR’s in such a beautiful, chilled setting. Felt like a proper blom session and it had us longing to be home, reminding us of good times and mates. As the evening and my weekend ended, I got to see some photos of my friends at The Monument in Pretoria, where they had an Easter picnic, as well as Matt sending me a photo of the sunset at Sterkfontein Dam.  216632_4507057790327_29185345_n 299158_4507069910630_1783837879_n 625473_587519747926237_401570647_nPretoria-20130331-00715 Pretoria-20130331-00713 Pretoria-20130331-00712 Pretoria-20130331-00721 Pretoria-20130331-00717 Pretoria-20130331-00722 IMG-20130331-00615 Pretoria-20130331-00723 Pretoria-20130331-00726

A chilled Easter weekend, with so many special moments, all of them being wide and far apart, but in each setting it was just amazing to see Jesus there, and see the Fingerprint of Love that He leaves everywhere, in every beautiful situation. The Fingerprint of Love that He has left, as if dying on a cross for us just wasn’t enough.sterkfontein dam - matty

Birthday Wish

Today has been one of my best friends’ birthday. Stubbs is such a close friend of mine, and someone I have known and respected for-like-ever!!!

Today, he is 22 and I’m totally bleak I’m not home. Would have loved to have gone down to the beach with him this morning. It’s just the best way to start your day, some chill time on the waves, taking a surf and swim. And then, it would have been my turn to make this guy some dinner! Haha

So anyway, to this wise old man…he’s 22, but wise beyond his years. It has been an honour being mates so far. You really have just made me proud over and over again as you have persevered through the toughest of situations. Always being responsible and humble. A servant-hearted guy, with God as your foundation. A better best mate, none of us could have asked for. So from Daryl, Ryan & I – happy birthday Stubbs. May you continue to grow, being a light for God and really being successful in all you do. You’re our best friend and it is great having you around. Miss you loads man! See you when I get home!!

Loads of love

xx

Treasuring Stories

This week has been a blessing as it is September, which means Spring for us! I experienced a hot season of Spring while being away on the game farm over the weekend but during the week it suddenly became cold & windy & in this dry, dusty Pretoria – the Spring Rains have come upon us. It has been cold & amazing cuddle weather – which can explain all the couples I’ve noticed but it has been refreshing to see the land washed clean of dust & smelling fresh every day.

Anyway, back to what I was thinking of saying…. I nearly gave a report back on what happened each day this past week but decided not to. My life is a bit hectic for that. Anyway, this week I just got to treasure stories. Stories of people, stories of people’s hearts & stories written by God! I was left in awe at how God works & the stories in our lives.

My week started out well, as it sounded as if there was a spot open at ECHO for a friend to go stay. The atmosphere at home for him is truly unbearable, so I am happy God is opening a new door for him. Anyway, Wednesday Anneke came home from work. She had resigned her job, she is moving out of our house, so that she could deal with all that had happened in her life. But greatest of all, she had done all this in faith, not knowing how she would pay for anything or what would happen but God provided. She would move in with a friend, whom had an extra room & said she could stay for free. Then, another of her friends is off to Cape Town 14 September & a friend sponsored Anneke with a ticket to & from Cape Town for that same weekend. Anneke, has been wanting to go away for so long but never gets the chance & lately Cape Town had been on her heart because at the beach she could always sort out her heart & mind. Now, she got the trip. God is so extremely faithful. I was so excited.

But while this was happening, I had been on the phone with a very good friend of mine, someone so close to my heart, Elicia. She had been on the brink of telling me great news too but when Anneke came in, I put her & her story on hold! But luckily, we were able to continue our conversation after Anneke left because I was on the brink of screaming from all the anticipation & excitement. Elicia has such a beautiful heart, words cannot describe & me trying to explain will never do her justice but she has a heart of gold, a servant-heart which I so dearly cherish. Anyway, one of the guys who spoke a Tuks Missions Week who gave his testimony of smuggling Bibles into a country a few times & was such a great man of God, had gotten to know my friend that week, and has been pursuing her weeks after. He asked her out, but before he was allowed to make it public she wanted to tell me. What a girl hey! Having her in my life has been such an incredible blessing and if anyone deserved a great prince – it was most definitely her. In the midst of loving God & loving people, God sent her a knight in shining armour. I am so extremely happy for them & hope many will hear of their story, find hope in it but also praise God for it.

Then, that evening, my lovely friend Mari shared her heart & a man of God she had gotten to know, but even if nothing comes of it, she has now seen what she admires & what a true man of God looks like. So even for her, there has been a great story. Apart from that though, 3 other couples I know have gotten engaged. Sorry to the guys & girls out there, but many of my friends seem to be taken off the shelf here in September, amazing ladies & great men too. I just want to congragulate the couples, Mitch & Jaydene – well it is about freakin time! God really comes through all they do so I am so happy for them, Mitch even designed the engagement ring for Jaydene – the prettiest ring I have seen by far – a beautiful flower. Then, one of the men that started our digs back in 2010 – Teodor & his fiancé, Marie-Louis, also about time hey! So happy for them, I’m sure God will bless them with many more amazing adventures together! And then a waitress I met while drinking coffee with Michael & Charl a few years back, while at Mugg ‘n Bean doing Bible Study. This girl just amazed me, her passion, her love for God while being so much younger than I am; she had such a maturity about her – Yonela & her fiancé, Mbali.

So, this week apart from all the love going around, was just me enjoying & cherishing stories & being able to see God’s hand in it & how He knows our hearts, our needs & deepest desires & how He also brings people together! I also just learnt how important it is for me to hear people’s stories. People always think all I do is meet with people & have coffee or ‘kuier’ with people, but it really is more than that. It is hearing the stories of people, their stories are often what defines them & as I have said before, when they tell me their stories, God speaks to me & I get to connect with those people but also with God on a deeper level.  When we look at people, you don’t really know them…until you ask them or listen to their stories & then, a whole new world opens up in front of you. So this week, or further on, try cherish people’s stories, you may be surprised at what you hear…
