A ‘no poo’ movement

The name ‘no poo’ movement sounds like a dodgy deal…with that name, what could it deliver but follow the link I’m about to share where a girl writes all about this.

It is such a great article, so well written and definitely something that will make you think twice about the products you’re using. Today, I have decided to make the switch and give this movement a try.

Here’s the link:

Autumn & Change

421389_546251828730412_381109794_nThe weekend that just passed must have been one of the worst I have experienced in a long time. This time being sick got the better of me. I have never spent so much time on the couch feeling sick, nauseas, vomiting, suffering from crazy migraines, cramps and a million other things. It really was terrible.

But between it all, I had some really great conversations with friends and a good planning weekend. Even though, my assignments have stacked up and it means a little more work and more focus this week but I’m excited.

The seasons are changing and fall is here… leaves are changing colour…CHANGE is hanging in the air. It is time for more cosy nights on couches, with warm eats, hot chocolate, great conversations, fireplaces heating homes, getting prepared for winter. I can already feel it all on my skin as the air becomes drier, the sun’s rays a little less harsh…denims, jackets, scarves, beanies, hoodies – all coming out of the closet now… Autumn is here and winter is swiftly following.

Trying to get into shape in winter or only starting then is terrible and not a place you want to be at. Trying to motivate yourself in cold weather, to get out there and exercise and get focused when all you want to do is snuggle up with a book and hot tea – is definitely a lot harder then it seems.

So I decided over the weekend, that I wasn’t going to get stuck in that place again. I got chatting to some personal trainers – that are friends too, and decided to get a workout program going for the next four weeks. I also got some natural supplements and stuff to help, and got chatting to a buddy of mine who has a MMA tournament in 2 weeks time who is needing to focus and train hard in these 2 weeks – so we’re keeping each other accountable and motivated, which makes it a little easier and fun when there’s two of us going through the same kinda stuff.

So, yes, I started today, in Autumn, bringing on some good changes. Had a crazy workout this morning, and my legs and arms and everything feels like jelly but I’m totally amped and excited. Although, I am regretting all the times that I laughed at my friend Corne, after he and Piet had gymed together and he came out feeling like jello, because I totally feel what he did and it’s pretty bitter-sweet.

Apart from that, there are many snacks and stuff to eat that is light and easy to make. Pita bread cut in half and then cut open so that you have four halves make for great pizza type treats with a lot less starch and carbs and they fill you up without making you full. Once you’ve opened them up, you can top them with pretty much anything before baking in the oven for about 5 to 10 minutes. We usually put a little olive oil, garlic, basil, tomato and mozzarella on it. But you can also put mozzarella, ham and basil on it. You can put all kinds of things you’d usually put on a pizza. I’ve even cut my pita into slices or other shapes and then sprinkled a little olive oil and baked them ‘til they’re crunchy in the oven and then dipped them in sauces I like, or cottage cheese or something. All the variations make for great snacks while studying, watching movies or even for parties and when you have people over.

I’ve also swapped my usual cup of tea with milk and sugar, for mint/green tea, which seems to be good for your metabolism but also for you r skin. In eating my cereal, I’ve added coconut milk instead of milk, and cut up bananas or dates to replace the sugar that is usually there. Spring rolls and lighter kinds of foods have also become more part of my eating routine, as well as soups for the winter, and I’m keeping away from the cream based soup as well. I’m trying my best to eat things that fill me up but don’t leave me feeling swollen, bloated or heavy, and reducing my portions help as well – but still keeping to eating 5 smaller portions a day, rather than 3 big ones.

Two other things I’ve added is getting a good cream keeping your skin moisturized this winter as well as added something to my conditioner to keep my hair healthy which was recommended by a good friend of mine. Add coconut oil to your body moisturizer, that’s what I did last winter and it really helped, but if you’re feeling a little lazier – Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is definitely worth the buy. Then to keep your hair healthy, moisturized and even help it grow, add a teaspoon Bergamotessens (which can be bought at your local chemist or drug store)  to your full bottle of conditioner. Don’t add more than that as it has a really strong smell that you don’t want on your head all day. But it really works and helps a lot, especially for girls with thin hair who want to thicken it up a bit.

So for those of you who want to get into eating or exercise routines, start now, before winter, so that by the time winter is here, you’re fully working into one already. Also take small steps, don’t set crazy goals and be so harsh on yourself that you end up putting yourself off of doing anything.

There’s a saying that goes, “exercising should be about rewarding your body with endorphins and strength, not about punishing your body for what you have eaten.”  I agree with that, if you’re going to punish yourself, you’re going to end up hating it and get put off, but if you see things in a light of rewarding your body with endorphins, great tasting, healthy and light snacks as well as feeling energized and good, then it makes it more worth it and easier to stand up in the moments where you feel like giving up.

City Life & its Blessings

Wow! Been back in the city for a few days and already I am missing the waves, the coast, the peace & absolute NO RUSH!!! Everything that has been happening since I’ve been back in Pretoria has left me a little tired & like I had no holiday at all!!! But being at the coast did get me back into a few great habits – like making time to spend with God(no leaving the house without chilling with Him first), healthy eating & getting back into some exercise routine!

A few really cool things have also happened! Apart from 7’s rugby training tonight which is also gonna kill me, I’ve had some very good news. A few posts ago I asked that we pray for 4 women – my mom, Riamien, Liz & Elicia. Of those 4 – I’ve heard great news from 2 of them, Liz & Riamien. Liz has started to recover after surgery, she is slowly getting back her strength & is now walking. She has even darkened her hair & cut a fringe(*bangs – for my American friends). It is a slow journey but I’m so happy to have her back at varsity, smiling & alive as we really didn’t know if she would make it at one point! Riamien went for her scan last Wednesday(exactly a week ago), we had all prayed for her the previous evening at a prayer meeting. The results came back earlier this week & were super positive.  Some of the stuff in her lungs that were 7cm have shrunken to the crazy size of 2cm & may not even be of any danger to her. She has 3 chemo sessions left that she will be getting next week! So praise the Lord for His amazing work!!! Such great news & blessings – to God be the glory!!!

I must admit though I did miss my housemates! Ani & I are exercising together daily & trying to support each other & motivate each other with the healthy eating! I really have missed talking to her & all the funny expressions she has. We have been busy turning our one room into a guest room, which we will finish tomorrow (as that is when our guests Mark – a former housemate & his wife Laura) & then the other, Ani & I are turning into a prayer room. We’re down to 5 girls in our house & 3 guys, with 2 more guys – Jason & Thomas moving in next week! Good friends of mine, Chris & Mona have moved to the city too now, from the coast & Chris is the new pastor at one of the churches in Doornkloof. So happy to have them closer, will be visiting there a lot. He preached on Sunday for the first time, Sunday morning & evening – I went to both services & it seems like they’re settling in very well. We’ll be having a kinda housewarming this Friday #braaitime

Other cool news I received over the weekend was from my friend Scotty!!! What a champion…. So this crazy child is going to Australia soon. He knows how keen I am on going and stuff and has offered to sponsor me a ticket!!! So Australia will be seeing me sooooooon!!! Whoop!!! Beyond keen #soexcited&blessed

Ohhhhhhh and some news – out of the city & more coastal vibes(I know this is supposed to be a city update but I just have to share). Bethany Hamilton has been awarded the wildcard, she is paddling out alongside Laurie Towner (Australia) and local surfers Mustofa Jeksen (Kuta) and Made Lana (Uluwatu) at the Rip Curl Cup 2012 at Padang Padang in Indonesia!!! She will be the first-ever woman to compete in the Rip Curl Cup which is currently taking place until the 26th August! So let’s hold thumbs that she’ll be catching some great waves as those can be quite a challenge!!!

Anyway that was just a little update! God is good & great & He does answer prayers!

Have a great blessed week

Exercise Fun

For some, exercising may be something unpleasant but here are a few other ideas you may enjoy. It may make it easier to start off with or to spice up your exercising routine.

1. Put on the music & get it pumping through the house or in your room or wherever it is. In my parents house they have one sick ass stereo system so I can really get the whole house pumping when I’m home for holidays. But back at my own diggs we usually have music going so this is awesome to do. Then, get your groove on, let go & dance your butt off!

2. So we can’t have a jumping castle every day but that can be substituted by a trampoline. Get on a trampoline & jump! Burning calories, getting your heart rate up & is good for the legs plus it’s fun

3. Play some swing ball. You’ll be getting some vitamin D out in the sun as well good for your arms.

4. If you’re at home & have brothers & sisters or you’re living with friends then this is usually a fun one. Have a pillow fight! Jumping over beds & couches, popping out behind doors & cupboards – it’s a fun game to play & great exercise! If you’re still living with your parents, try not destroy the pillows, this may only get you in trouble!

5. Kick boxing. Well this is hardcore & fun. Not only a good workout but great after a day filled with frustration!

6. Frisbee. This is fun to play with on the beach or anywhere you may be. Get a couple of friends, play some frisbee & maybe have supper together afterwards.

So this was a question someone asked. Just what they could do to help their eyelashes grow.

Well here are a few things – you could brush your eye lashes, use vaseline on your eyelids, try lash accelerators(these are available in stores), put some olive oil on cotton & swipe over your lids – leaving olive oil on you lids at night(as you sleep), massage your eyelids, use lengthening mascara(I’m not sure that really works though), use vitamin E or vitamin E lotion & lastly a healthy diet filled with fruits and veggies.

Hope that helps

Natural Beauty – Makeup Free

For many of us, applying makeup happens way to easily and too often. Especially when we’re wanting to cover up & we grab whatever we can find. Often it can be a challenge to choose natural over makeup but I would challenge you to try it for a while in order to give you and your skin a breather. For some natural is easy, others it may be harder. But here are a few tips.

1. Drink water – this I have mentioned in way too many posts but I cannot stress this enough! At least 6 – 8 cups a day is what your body & skin needs!

2. Exfoliate your skin – now that you have your skin hydrated, you need to make sure you scrub off all that unwanted oil. Use a scrub or an exfoliating sponge.

3. Apply coconut oil to your skin – this is a great alternative to a lot of the creams we use today. This softens your skin really well & will give it an outstanding glow.

4. Moisturize your skin daily – this is super important for your skin if you want it looking healthy & natural. It needs to be done daily, not once in a while when it is looking dry.

5. Groom your eyebrows – don’t forget about your brows. Trimming, waxing & making sure that you keep those brows in shape is a great way to keep your natural beauty & you don’t need makeup for it.

6. Wear colours to highlight your eye colour – just because you’re leaving makeup alone doesn’t mean you don’t have to highlight your eyes some other way. Wear an outfit that really sparks your eye colour. I have greenish hazel eyes, so a little bright green in my outfit will make my eyes pop, all without the makeup!

7. Lip Balm – your lips need to be kept hydrated too

8. Eat fruits & veggies – this is a must, as you are what you eat. You may as well have a good diet, not just for your skin but for your health too.

9. Smile – smiling is a great thing. It can completely change your look! And when you smile, someone else may smile. This could not only benefit you but many others & who doesn’t want to be the reason for brightening someone else’s day?!

Natural Cleanser Ingredients

Here are a few things that can be added to your cleansers to help your skin if they aren’t already part of your diet.

1. Natural Yogurt
This will soften skin & is also a natural anti-fungal & antibacterial agent, so add it to your cleanser & store in the fridge.

2. Ground Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds that have been pulsed a few times in a blender are fantastic to add into any exfoliating facial products. They aren’t as harsh as sea salt & are a great source of Vitamin E.

3. Banana
This is a nutritious addition for your nourishing cleanser. It moisturises which helps dry skin, promotes rejuvenation & assists in rebuilding natural defences against the sun, heat & general damage from the elements.

4. Kiwi Fruit
Liquefied kiwi is packed with vitamin C & it’s a natural source of skin refining fruit acids. These help even out skin tone & seal in moisture. Use if you want to minimise pores & promote a smooth, even complexion.

5. Pineapple
This is used in many commercial cleanser & facial scrubs to eliminate blemishes & dark marks. It helps regulate skin texture & also has astringent properties making it an excellent chemical exfoliant.

6. Brewer’s Yeast
This helps regulate oily & blemished skin & contributes to an even skin tone. Also use it to help control mild outbreaks of acne.

7. Almond Oil
This ingredient is great to include if you’re battling with very sensitive, dry skin. It sooths & sinks into pores very quickly, delivering nutrients & moisture directly where they need to be without leaving behind any sort of residue on your skin’s surface.

8. Honey
It is a natural antibacterial & can help defend against acne-causing germs. Its antioxidants will battle against free radicals & is also an organic skin softner.
